DIY How to Sweat a Copper Pipe Joint for Leaky Water Heater Repair Job [...

The hot water outlet on the water heater had a small leak in the copper piping that happened to also be dangerously close to the wall framing. This job involved cutting into the dry wall to access the leaky joint and assess potential water damage inside the wall. The best plumber I know did all the work on this while I assisted him. He did a wonderful job protecting the wall and angling the torch so that none of wall got burned. He unseated the old joint, cleaned up the existing pipe with sandpaper, then sweated a new coupling connection on the existing copper pipe successfully on the first attempt. Before performing this work we drained the water heater tank, lifted the relief valve for venting, and turned off the electrical power to it as well at the breaker.
